John Francis Canavan, born on October 8, 1938, a lifelong resident of South Boston, passed away on June 13, 2026. His life was marked by unwavering dedication, profound kindness, and a commitment to helping others that left a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege to know him
John, affectionately known as Jack, was born and raised in South Boston. He graduated from South Boston High School, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Boston State College more than 20 years later.
In 1987 he earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Boston University. His intellectual curiosity and love of reading and writing, and his commitment to addiction counseling enriched his life and the lives of those around him.
In service to his country, Jack proudly served in the US Army, stationed in Germany, exemplifying a spirit of duty and honor that extended throughout his life. His career was distinguished by his commitment as a proud and loyal firefighter with the Boston Fire Department. Upon his retirement, he was instrumental in co-founding the BFD’s Employee Assistance Program. His dedication to the wellbeing of his community did not stop there, as he later offered his counseling skills to the Gillette Corporation Employee Assistance Program. His efforts in these roles not only strengthened these organizations but provided countless individuals with hope and paths to success.
Jack’s character was defined by his helpful and understanding nature. Always willing to extend a hand, he was a sponsor for many on their journey to recovery from addiction and famously made space in his rental apartments for many during their time of need. His enduring 50+ years as a friend of Bill W. stands as a testament to his strength of character.
Beyond his professional and philanthropic endeavors, Jack cherished simple pleasures: working out, enjoying spin classes, and sharing lunch with his buddies at L Street in South Boston. He and Wee Wee enjoyed many Caribbean cruises and vacations together in Siesta Key, FL. And he always enjoyed a good meal and relaxing with a good cigar. These moments of joy reflected a man who balanced steadfast responsibility with heartfelt enjoyment of life.
John is survived by his beloved daughters, Christine Marie "Chi-Chi" Canavan and her partner Paula Jurigian of Wakefield, and Casey Ann Boothby and her husband Nathan of Conway, New Hampshire. He was a devoted grandfather to Karlie and her husband Timothy Brown, Kaela Boothby, Louis Canavan, and Hannan Canavan, and a great-grandfather to Alan Joel Brown. He also leaves behind his dear brother, Reverend Peter K Canavan, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who remain deeply touched by his generous spirit.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Louise “Wee Wee” Canavan (Duggan), his parents, John and Anne Canavan (Grealish), his siblings Paul Canavan and Barbara Hayward, and his sister-in-law Anna M Litif.
